Our expertise

At Balvac we specialise in providing comprehensive solutions to return our customers assets to full capacity and extend their working life.

Our expertise spans every stage of asset management, from Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) and technical proposals to design management, temporary works and detailed inspection and test plans.

Drawing on over 90 years of experience, we work collaboratively with our customers and supply chain partners to deliver thorough inspections and condition surveys, gathering vital data that informs targeted improvements and essential repairs.

Whether we are carrying out surveys and non-destructive testing, post-tensioning and bearing inspections, or load and pile monitoring and structural health monitoring, our approach ensures that every asset is cared for with precision and foresight – ensuring it performs at its best for years to come.

Our consultancy extends to noise, vibration and air quality assessment, as well as acoustic modelling and workplace evaluations for noise, fumes, dust and HAVS.

Our specialist services include:

  • Structural repair, strengthening and protection

We offer a comprehensive range of structural repair, strengthening and protection services including:

    • Concrete repairs (hand-applied, flowable, sprayed)
    • Advanced protective coatings and waterproofing
    • Cathodic protection (ICCP, galvanic, hybrid)
    • Sprayed concrete methods
    • Crack and leak injection
    • CFRP and steel strengthening

  • Structural health monitoring

Our structural health monitoring services include:

    • Crack movement
    • Movement and displacement
    • Inclination and tilt
    • Strain
    • Vibration
    • Acoustic emissions
    • Half-cell potential (permanent reference cells)
    • Load testing of anchors (post tensioning and ground anchors)
    • Ambient conditions (temperature, humidity)
  • Structural survey, inspection and testing

To ensure structural integrity, we carry out a range of structural survey, inspection and testing services, including:

    • Comprehensive visual inspections – general, principal and specialist
    • Delamination assessments
    • Chemical sampling of concrete and steel
    • Steel sample collection for strength testing
    • Measurement of carbonation depth in concrete
    • Concrete cover surveys
    • Void detection using Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and ultrasonic testing
    • Crack width monitoring
    • Half-cell potential testing to evaluate corrosion risks in steel reinforcement
    • Electrical resistivity measurements for material integrity
    • Inspection of structural bearings
    • Special inspections of post-tensioning systems (PTSI)
    • Pile testing, including static load, dynamic load and integrity assessments
    • Platform testing to ensure safe operational standards
  • Concrete pavement stabilisation and re-alignment

Specialising in the stabilisation of concrete pavements, we utilise advanced vacuum grouting techniques such as Road Void Grouting (RVG) and Vacuum Void Grouting (VVG). Our services include:

    • Precise realignment of sunken slabs through controlled lifting and targeted grouting of underlying voids
    • Proven methodologies originating from the 1970s, continually enhanced by modern equipment and updated processes
    • Applications span a wide range of concrete pavement slabs, including those used in warehouses, roadways, and airfields. This also encompasses the rehabilitation of concrete roads throughout the Strategic Road Network (SRN) as well as within local and regional authority networks.

  • Noise, vibration and air quality monitoring

    Our comprehensive services include:

    • Acoustic consultancy such as BS4142 and BS5228 assessments and noise predictions
    • Workplace assessments for noise, fumes, dust and HAVS
